There is nothing I can do to cause God to love me any more than He already loves me and there is nothing I can do to cause Him to love me any less than He already loves me. God may not always like everything I do but He always likes me!

Does God really love me that much? Is it really that unconditional and free? Yep. Not only that, this is the foundation for going on to maturity with God. There are consequences for my actions, and a prayerless life, for example, will probably not have much power; however, without a foundation of unconditional love everything moves to law, works-earning, instead of freely receiving.

Romans 7:5 says that it is the law (works, earning) that stirs up the sinful passions of the flesh. Titus 2:12 says it is God’s grace, His undeserved favor (freely receiving) that teaches us to deny ungodliness and lust.

Knowing I am loved frees me to seek God for who He is, laying aside my need to control, earn by law and have my identity in having to be good enough.
