JUTE FROM INDIA

This Freeset Bag tells a story, a story of one woman’s journey to freedom. She used to stand with six thousand other prostitutes in a small but well-known area of North Calcutta, India.  She didn’t choose her profession, it chose her. Poverty does that. It robs people of their dignity and children of their innocence.

She still lives and works in the same area, but instead of selling her body she makes and sells Freeset Bags.  Now she has choices, the choice to work decent hours for decent pay, to re-establish her dignity in her community and to learn to read and write in her own language. Now her daughter won’t have to stand in the street selling her body like her mum used to do.  Freedom has been passed onto the next generation.

By purchasing these Freeset Bags, you become part of the story of freedom. Thank you!

Freeset Bags are made from jute which is a type of plant fiber used to make items like rope, twine, sacks, hessian cloth, carpets and even the backing used on linoleum. The fiber is made by spinning it into a coarse thread, which can make the texture rough, but sometimes the fine threads of it are used to create imitation silk.
